Mercy, Healing, and Superstition

Written by Jake Hooper
bible (6)biblical-theme (5)
God designed us to be whole people—body, soul and spirit. And God cares about the totality of who we are. We'll study what happened at the Pool of Bethesda in John 5 and discuss the roles of mercy, healing and superstition in our own lives.

Healing

  • There's a lot to learn about this story of the healing a lame man.
  • Healing pools and shrines were common in the middle east. With mineral water and/or hot springs.
  • Some of these were shrines built for other gods.

(John 5:1-15) Man is healed at the pool of Bethesda

  • The question "do you want to be made whole?" seems like a rhetorical question but someone who doesn't want help can't be helped
  • We should persue transformation and be determined to carry out God's will without distraction
  • The man is told that he should stop sinning or something worse would happen
1 And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth.
2 And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?
3 Jesus answered, "Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him."
John 9:1-3

Later the man born blind learns who Jesus is and confesses his faith in him, but he didn't when he was healed

31 Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.
32 Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind.
33 If this man were not of God, he could do nothing.
34 They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.
35 Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, "Dost thou believe on the Son of God?"
36 He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him?
37 And Jesus said unto him, "Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee."
38 And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.
John 9:31-38

Contrasting this story of healing with others, the man doesn't confess faith in Jesus but is healed.

20 And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment:
21 For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole.
22 But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, "Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole." And the woman was made whole from that hour.
Matthew 9:20-22

Jesus doesn't do mighty works because of unbelief

53 And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these parables, he departed thence.
54 And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works?
55 Is not this the carpenter’s son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas?
56 And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things?
57 And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, "A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house."
58 And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief.
Matthew 13:53-58

The sins of the nation lead to spiritual and physical sickness

2 Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth: for the Lord hath spoken, I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me.
3 The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master’s crib: but Israel doth not know, my people doth not consider.
4 Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the Lord, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward.
5 Why should ye be stricken any more? ye will revolt more and more: the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.
6 From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ointment.
7 Your country is desolate, your cities are burned with fire: your land, strangers devour it in your presence, and it is desolate, as overthrown by strangers.
Isaiah 1:2-7

People often turn away the sinful people around us, but those are the people who need us to present our faith in God the most. There's a tendency to not want to be seen with a particularly sinful crowd, but Jesus turns this upside down by hanging out with those that need him most.

30 But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners?
31 And Jesus answering said unto them, "They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick."
Luke 5:30-31
16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.
19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
Galatians 5:16-21

Our spiritual health

Preach the word to everyone and recieve a crown of righteousness

2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
5 But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.
6 For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand.
7 I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:
8 Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.
2 Timothy 4:2-8

Correction is uncomfortable, but necassary for us to learn and grow into the pontential that God wants for out lives. Many in this world will sell their birthright for a morsel of meat. An immediate gain that leads to a long time of destruction in the future. Our society has become addicted to immediate gratification.

Make straight paths and be at peace with chastizement

9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?
10 For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.
11 Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.
12 Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees;
13 And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed.
14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:
15 Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;
16 Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.
Hebrews 12:9-16

God is the source of our strength, when we are our weakest, then God's strength can shine through us.

Paul is denied healing after he healed many

5 Of such an one will I glory: yet of myself I will not glory, but in mine infirmities.
6 For though I would desire to glory, I shall not be a fool; for I will say the truth: but now I forbear, lest any man should think of me above that which he seeth me to be, or that he heareth of me.
7 And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.
8 For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.
9 And he said unto me, "My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness." Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.
2 Corinthians 12:5-10

Timothy uses wine to settle his infirmities

20 Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear.
21 I charge thee before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality.
22 Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men’s sins: keep thyself pure.
23 Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities.
24 Some men’s sins are open beforehand, going before to judgment; and some men they follow after.
25 Likewise also the good works of some are manifest beforehand; and they that are otherwise cannot be hid.
1 Timothy 5:20-25

Often times people will say to someone that is not healed, that they lack faith, but I think it is important to understand that God has a larger purpose for our lives and sometimes the request for healing is denied. God has a greater priority for our spiritual health and where our lives lead to than to never have sickness or bad health. Sometimes he has other things in mind for us, or to show others our faith in the face of adversity.

Conclusion

God see everything we do and think, people seem to hide from God like Adam and Eve tried to hide behind a tree from God. Luckily for us God has a wealth of mercy to give for those who seek him and repent of their deeds. Those who cry out to him for forgiveness though we don't deserve it which is the meaning of grace. We should always strive to be humble, build our faith, and grow closer to God every day.

God srengthens the weary

27 Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest, O Israel, My way is hid from the Lord, and my judgment is passed over from my God?
28 Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.
29 He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.
30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall:
31 But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. *
Isaiah 40:27-31

In the end God will remove all sin and sickness from the earth and dwell with us in person, ruling the earth directly

3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.
4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
5 And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.
6 And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.
7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.
